Tell Me What to Do: A Story About Transformational Time and Project Management

I was recently walking around the theater where I am currently working, which is also a theater where I had worked many years ago. As I entered different rooms, offices and hallways, I kept coming across my drawings and photos framed on the walls from the different shows I had done. I had to laugh at myself, because with each drawing came a flood of both memory and astonishment.

First of all, I was astonished to see that these were the drawings which MY MIND had stressed over – and how they were ‘not good enough’. Yet here they were framed, years later. My drawings are the very first thing you see as you enter the managing director’s office and the artistic director’s office. As I looked up and saw them – and BEFORE I even realized they were mine - I thought “Wow, what a beautiful set of drawings”. Blew that whole story of ‘not good enough’ out of the water instantaneously!

But I also had to laugh, and say thank you to Ariel and Shya Kane for their participation in each of those drawings. As I rounded the corner to one of the rooms, I looked up and saw one of my big illustration boards from 2003. Ariel’s voice came through my head: “Storyboards, storyboards, storyboards - directors love your storyboards!” I answered back - “Really? Are you sure?” To which she replied - “Draw storyboards, I am sure!” Gee, do you think she was right?

So as I continue my walk through the theater, I go down the stairs and notice my drawing of a green queen on the wall. I distinctly recall a conversation back in 1999, that I had with The Kanes. “Hi, this is Caitlin calling, can you please tell me to draw?” Shya had answered the phone and said to me - “Okay, I’ll call you back” A few moments later he called back – “Hi Caitlin, this is Shya - draw.” Gee, do you think he was right?

As I walk into the director’s office - on the wall are two of the first drawings I ever did on the computer, back in 2001. Again, The Kanes’ voices echoed in my head, “Caitlin would you like to use our laptop and our drawing tablet? We think you would benefit greatly from learning to use the computer to draw with.” At that time I had a story in my mind that I could never use a computer, let alone draw with it. Today I am doing most of my drawings on the computer and sending them over email, some of which are for Hollywood films and the upcoming Beijing Olympics.

The Kane’s are my coaches and have been my coaches for my entire career in costume design and film and theater production. Here on the walls of this theater - I can see what a profound effect they have had on me. As I look at all this work, I am so grateful for their constant support, insight and forethought - for their coaching - and their willingness to share Transformation with me.
